An air conditioner that runs but blows warm air is the single most common call we get during a heat wave. The good news: about a third of these turn out to be something you can fix in five minutes. Here's the list in the order we actually find them in the field.

1. Thermostat set wrong (yes, really)

Check that it's on COOL, not FAN or HEAT, and that the fan is on AUTO. If someone bumped it to "fan on," you'll get airflow with zero cooling. Also replace the batteries — a dying thermostat sends unreliable signals.

2. Filthy air filter

A clogged filter starves the blower, drops the coil below freezing and turns your evaporator into a block of ice. Once iced, no air passes and what does reach you is warm. Shut the system off, run the fan only for two to three hours to thaw it, install a clean filter, then restart.

3. Tripped breaker on the outdoor unit

Central systems have two circuits: indoor air handler and outdoor condenser. If only the condenser breaker tripped, the fan inside keeps blowing room-temperature air. Reset it once. If it trips again, stop — that's an electrical fault and it needs a technician, not another reset.

4. Failed run capacitor

This is the number-one failed part in hot climates. The capacitor gives the compressor and fan motor the jolt they need to start. Symptoms: humming from the outdoor unit, a fan that won't spin, or a unit that clicks and does nothing. It's an inexpensive part and a same-visit fix. See AC repair.

5. Low refrigerant from a leak

Refrigerant is not consumed — if you're low, you have a leak. Warm air, hissing, ice on the copper line and higher bills all point here. Simply "topping it off" every summer is money burned; the leak has to be found and repaired.

6. Dirty condenser coil

The outdoor coil rejects heat. Pack it with grass clippings, cottonwood and dust and it can't, so the system runs and runs without cooling. Gently rinse it from the inside out with the power off. Never use a pressure washer — you'll flatten the fins.

7. Frozen evaporator coil

Caused by restricted airflow or low refrigerant. Thaw it as described above, but if it re-freezes within a day, the underlying cause is still there.

8. Failed contactor

The contactor is the relay that energizes the compressor. Pitted or welded contacts mean the outdoor unit never engages. Cheap part, fast repair.

9. Compressor failure

The expensive one. A seized or electrically shorted compressor on a system over ten years old usually pushes the decision toward replacement rather than repair, especially on older R-22 equipment.

The five-minute homeowner checklist

  1. Thermostat set to COOL, fan on AUTO, fresh batteries.
  2. Replace the air filter.
  3. Check both breakers.
  4. Look for ice on the indoor coil or copper lines.
  5. Clear leaves and debris two feet around the outdoor unit.
  6. Confirm the outdoor fan is actually spinning.
