- Glance at the condensate drain line for standing water or slime.
- Confirm all supply vents are open and unblocked by furniture or rugs.
- Listen for new noises — grinding, squealing or rattling means something is wearing out.
Every season
- Clear two feet of space around the outdoor unit; trim shrubs and pull weeds.
- Gently rinse the condenser coil with a garden hose, power off, spraying from inside out.
- Pour a cup of distilled vinegar down the condensate drain access to prevent algae clogs.
- Vacuum return grilles and wipe supply registers.
- Test the system in the opposite mode before you need it — run heat in early fall, cooling in early spring.
- Check that the outdoor unit sits level; a tilted pad stresses refrigerant lines.
